Jenkintown

One of the oldest boroughs in Montgomery County, Jenkintown, is
densely populated town just outside of Philadelphia. Founded by
Stephen Jenkins, a Welsh pioneer settler in 1697, the town has
grown into busy corridor for the city. Jenkintown is divided into an
East/West split by the Old York Road (route 611). On the east side
of town it is predominantly large detached single family homes.
While the west side of town (the more downtown part) is made up
of duplexes row homes and small single family detached homes.

Today, the Borough is approximately .58 of a square mile and is
home to 4,500 residents. Jenkintown Borough is a pedestrian oriented community in which residents walk to the stores, the Post Office, and Church, their children walk to school, to the playground, and to their friends’ houses, and patrons are able to easily walk the Central Business District. These revitalization efforts include the implementation of streetscape improvements, increased public parking and shared parking, traffic calming enhancements, and renovations to the Hiway Theatre and the Salem Baptist Church.

Along with the split of east and west is also a quirky split of 2 firehouses dating back to 1884 and 1889 prospectively, representing the historic split of the Catholic and protestant churches at that time. You will find many a small business and restaurant in the area that service the local community that has strong roots to its past. With a short ride on the Septa rail this town is a great place for someone moving to the area that wants to be close to the city but live in a quiet town with a small town feel.
