Mountville
The town, which traces its founding to 1814, was originally called Mount
Pleasant. By the time a post office opened in 1842, the town was called
Mountville, a name the railroad had been using for the town since at least
1837. The Mountville Manufacturing Co. was founded with a plant built in
the southwest part of Mountville in 1896, and was operated until 1942
when it was bought by New Holland Machine Co., whose successor
company, CNH Global, now operates a distribution center on the site of
both former manufacturers. The road around which Mountville was
developed eventually became part of the Lincoln Highway,
a transcontinental road dedicated in 1913 that ran from New York City to San Francisco.

Recognizing the need for a municipal water system, the town incorporated as a borough in 1906.
After several annexations of land adjoining the borough through the years since, Mountville now consists of just under one square mile of residential, commercial, industrial and public property. Mountville also boasts one of the highest ratios of public park space per capita. With slightly more than 2,800 residents, the borough is served by the West Hempfield Township Police Department, protected by the Mountville Volunteer Fire Company, and educated by the Hempfield School District.

Supported by the steady stream of traffic that came directly through town, businesses popped up and thrived along Mountville’s main street.
