As you are industriously preparing and packing boxes just before moving day, keep in mind that there are some items that should not be packed before your mover arrives. Keeping a chronological list of to-do items can be helpful to you and your family.
Talk with your mover in advance about any items that cannot be transported. This will include flammable items such as aerosol cans of paint, kerosene and gasoline. Locate a hazardous waste site in your area to ask about proper disposal methods. Explosive items like fireworks will not be able to go in the truck either. Likewise, ask for specific instructions for firearms.
Ask your mover if your house plants can be moved. Some states don’t allow vegetation to cross state lines. If your move is over a considerable long distance, you may not want your greenery in the dark without being watered that long anyway. If you are moving locally, you have the option of transporting your houseplants in your car in advance, or even after the move. Or, ask your friends to care for your plants until they come to visit your new home.
Perishable foods can be donated to neighbors, friends or a local food bank the day prior to the move. Expect to eat carryout for at least a day or two, unless you plan to pack foods into a cooler that will travel with you to your new location.
Once you have learned which items your mover will not transport, make a list of your family’s immediate needs. These are items that will not go into the truck, the important items that your children will need before their first day of school and adults will need before returning to work. Pack a suitcase for each family member. Include pajamas, change of clothes, toothbrush, toiletries, medications, and maybe even clothes for the first day of school or work.
Keep money, jewelry, and valuable papers with you in the trunk of your car in a safety box. Unless you are moving locally, don’t forget to empty your safety deposit box at the bank, too.
Be sure your pets are micro-chipped, and the chip company has your new address. Have a backpack full of food, bowls, chew toys, balls and medications for your companions. Organization is always key to packing for a stress-free move. By following these tips you will be well on your way to a smooth relocation.
